How to Fast According to the Bible
Fasting is a practice that can be read about in various parts of the bible, and it is important to do it in a way that God approves; otherwise, it would be a waste of our efforts. So let us explore how to fast and how not to fast.
What to do and not to do during a fast
1. Lessons from Matthew 6:16-18
Jesus gave us specific instructions on what not to do when we fast.
We should not act like hypocrites:
- We should not look sad or miserable while we are fasting.
- We should not do things that are out of the ordinary. For example, we should take a bath/shower and look neat.
- We should not tell others that we are fasting, but we should fast in secret.
2. Lessons from Isaiah 58:1-12
We read of other other instructions in the book of Isaiah.
We learn the following lessons in various verses:
- Verse 3 - We should not be doing what pleases us, but what pleases God.
- Verse 4 - We should not engage in arguments, conflict, or violence.
- Verse 6 - We should stop sinning and oppressing others.
- Verse 7 and 10 - We should feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and help the poor.
The true spirit of devotion is not seen in pointless grief, meager physical humiliation, or numerous sacrifices; instead, it is revealed by giving yourself in willing service to God and humanity.
Fasting Guidelines
It is crucial not to obsess over what we should and should not eat. Remember that the most significant aspect of the fast is what occurs in our hearts. We deprive ourselves physically so that we may pray to the Lord with fewer distractions and greater mental clarity. Because we want to get closer to Him, we fast. Our individual fast may differ slightly from that of others, but that is acceptable.
Some individuals may choose to adhere to tougher dietary restrictions than others; nonetheless, this does not make them more spiritual or holy. That just indicates they are being directed to perform a different action.
Thus, the purpose of these eating rules is to serve as a guide. They are provided to assist in establishing healthy limits for a fast. However, the ultimate decision regarding how and what to fast should be made between God and us.
There are different kinds of fast.
- Dry fast (No food and no liquids) - Preferably done over a very short period e.g., one day
- Vegetables only
- Fruits only
- Vegetables or fruits only
- Liquid fast
You should preferably consult your doctor before starting a fast, especially if you have a health condition or are pregnant.
